Contraceptives can make you sharper?
For all those who chose birth-control pills as a safe measure of contraceptives, here is news for you! A latest study has revealed that birth control pills affect your memory. Researchers at the University of California have found that many women who use contraceptives like birth control pills experience memory changes. Women using the contraceptives retain details better while those who do not use contraceptives retain only the gist of the incident. Although the medications did not damage their memory, it's a change in the type of information they remember, not a deficit. In the study, groups of women either on the contraceptive or experiencing natural hormonal cycles were shown photographs of a mother, her son, and a car accident. The audio narrative differed; some in each group were told the car had hit a curb, while others were told the car hit the boy and injured him. One week later, all were given tests about what they recalled. Women using contraceptives remembered more clearly the main steps while women not using them remembered only the gist of the event.
Experts are not sure if this is good news or bad as the reason for this change in mental behaviour has not been found. But they confirm that this change is a side effect of prolonged usage.
Although a lot of gynecologist advice the use of contraceptive pills to their patients, none of them were aware of this side effect. Even today many women do not look towards these pills as a safe measure and have their fears in using them. A lot of them fear permanent damages to their bodies apart from other side effects. Such a study will clear their misunderstanding, at least for now, and can relax them. And for women who have been using them till now, here is one more advantage to do so.
