Hillary Clinton
The first First Lady of the United States to seek and win a political office while still being the First Lady, Hillary Clinton is a name that not only commands respect but also inspires millions of young women, worldwide.A native of Illinois, Hillary first burst into the national scene with her remarks as the first student commencement speaker at Wellesley College. She pursued a career in law after graduating from Yale Law School in 1973. She then moved to Arkansas in 1974 after serving as Congressional legal counsel and married future US President, Bill Clinton, in 1975. Following her marriage, Hillary cofounded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in 1977 and became the first female chairperson of the Legal Services Corporation the very next year. After Bill Clinton was appointed as the Governor of Arkansas, she served as the First Lady from 1979 to 1981 and 1983 to 1992 and successfully reformed the education system of Arkansas. She also sat on the board of directors for several corporations including Wal-Mart.
Hillary was instrumental in the creation of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, the Adoption and Safe Families Act and the Foster Care Independence Act during her tenure as the First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Her marriage to Bill Clinton became a matter of national concern, and speculations regarding her marriage flew high and dry following the Lewinsky Scandal in 1998 but Hillary stuck to her husband even during these adverse times.
Hillary then moved to the state of New York and was elected the Senator of the state in 2000, thus becoming the first First Lady of the US to hold a political office. She was, apparently, also the first female Senator of New York. Hillary had initially supported the Bush administration on some foreign policy issues but subsequently opposed the administration following their conduct of the war in Iraq. She was reelected as the Senator of New York in 2006. In the 2008 presidential nomination race, Hillary put up a tough fight but eventually lost to Illinois Senator Barrack Obama by a very narrow margin. She, however, did manage to win more primaries and delegates than any other female candidate in the US history, ever.
Hillary Clinton became the first former First Lady to serve in a president's cabinet following her election as the United States Secretary of State. She was instrumental in the election of her husband Bill Clinton as the 42nd President of the United States and played a major role during his election campaigns. She was also twice listed as one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America. She has also set many records as the most-travelled secretary of the US for time in office.
Hillary had always been instrumental in promoting women empowerment all across the globe and also activities concerning health and children. She has also received many awards and honours from various international organisations for her humanitarian work.
